"The largest ski resort in the world" goes to China via Dubai

Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) - Majid Al Futtaim has announced its development assistance for Shanghai's Wintastar Resort, the world's largest ice skating park in Shanghai, China. The ski resort will have an area of 90,000 square meters, three times the size of Ski Dubai, which opened in 2005. The Harbin Wanda indoor ski and winter sports resort in China has been named the world's largest theme park, opening in 2017 with an area of 80,000 square meters. In a press statement, Majid Al Futtaim explained that the Shanghai complex will have 3 ski slopes, each with varying degrees of difficulty, and one of which will comply with the Olympic Training Standards. The resort is planned to include 25 leisure activities for non-skiers. The resort, located in the new Pudong area, will be the first move by Majid Al Futtaim outside the Middle East and North Africa region. Ski Dubai is a subsidiary of Majid Al Futtaim, the first of its kind in the Middle East. In the year 2017, Ski Dubai was named the "Best Indoor Ski Resort in the World" by the International Ski Awards. "We are confident that this move will mark the beginning of an international footprint, when it comes to indoor indoor ski facilities," said Majid Al Futtaim Group Chief Executive Officer Ahmed Jalal Ismail. Singapore's property development and entertainment company KOB Limited will manage China's ski resort. The project was launched on 30 August this year. The ski resort is timely, with China hosting, for the first time, the Beijing Winter Olympics in 2022. However, it seems that some do not favor winter sports in China. In 2017, the white paper report indicated that 12.1 million Chinese had experienced at least one skating, less than 1 percent of 1.38 billion. The government has taken measures, including school grants and plans for at least 600 skating rinks, and has encouraged private sector expansion, with the aim of involving 300 million citizens in winter sports by 2025. "Winter sports will be the next big thing in China," Qi Qing, president and chief executive officer of KOB Limited, said. The Shanghai Wintstar is one of the ski resorts that Majid Al Futtaim has developed. In addition to Ski Dubai, Ski Egypt, which opened in 2017, is the first indoor ski resort in Africa. Sky Saudi Arabia and Snow Oman are under development, according to Kobe. So far, the expected completion date of Shanghai Wintstar Resort has not been announced.
